Sort one bin at a time to regain a little order!
Hey y’all! Do you feel like the toy store has barfed in your house all over the place? I feel like that all the stinkin’ time. Just wanted to share quickly something that has worked for us lately. Recently, we went to IKEA and got these awesome units that we have in our playroom. I hear a lot of moms (especially of boys) battle with ALL. THE. STUFF. Short of taking it all out (which has crossed my mind more than once) this is ONE of the things we do that helps out so much.
On Saturdays, one item on their job charts is SORT ONE BIN. They know what this means. They have been trained to:
1. Dump the bin
(Kutter the cat is a big help) These particular bins are discontinued but I found these that are perfect for the job and you can get some cool pieces that go with them. Cool new bins here
2. Sort one bin into three piles:
KEEP – this stuff is stuff you’re keeping and stuff that stays in that room. If it goes in another room, put it aside for later. Do NOT go put it up right then because you’ll get distracted and never come back to the original project.
GIVE AWAY – this stuff is the stuff that needs to go. Either it’s been outgrown, or just not loved anymore. It’s why we sort one bin at a time so that we’re not overwhelmed.
THROW AWAY – this pile is always fun… you know, the empty wrappers that no one wanted to walk four feet to the trash can so they tossed them in the bin!!! Trash goes in the trash can!!
3. Slide the bin back into it’s spot
There are only 15 bins in this playroom and there are 52 weeks in the year so they get sorted a few times a year. This way, when it’s time to ‘clean’ the room, they can just pick up stuff and toss it in a bin and know that it will get sorted on Saturday.
Hope this helps someone!
Keep it Simple.
