So I’m reading The Circle Maker book by Mark Batterson. I ‘won’ the book in a drawing at our couples’ retreat back in March of this year. I say ‘won’ with quotes because they made sure everyone got something because they’re just cool that way!
The book is very good.
I’d highly recommend it to ANYONE. I don’t care what religion you claim or what your background is. This is not a baptist book. It’s not a presbyterian book. It’s a book about prayer. First, let me say this, if you are not saved and you don’t know for sure you’re going to heaven when you die, please get that done first. Go here.
Second, when you read this book you are going to realize there is SO much more to praying!!! Sure we say the blessing before each meal. Sure we say our prayers before bed. We’ve even been known to say a quick prayer when an ambulance passes us. But seriously, y’all, there’s so much our God wants to do for us but we are NOT ASKING Him!!!
So here’s what I did on Saturday.
I walked around my house 7 times! You can be a circle maker! Yep, it was raining, and it felt stupid. But we really, really, really want to get our house paid off sooner rather than later and I’m not sure we’ve really asked God to help us. We’ve ‘prayed’ about it. Sort of.
I’m certainly not saying that like the walls of Jericho that suddenly and magically our house will get paid off but something started happening yesterday that was unexpected.
I really was just talking to God.
No, I mean really talking.
Because I circled the house 7 times on Saturday, then I did it again yesterday, I began to notice something yesterday. When I finished the first time around, I was talking as if I was just picking up the conversation from the day before. I said outloud of the things He has brought us through. I was reminded of the promises He has kept. I recited a scripture or two that I forgot I knew. I don’t think I’ve ever really prayed like that except when my life was completely falling apart and I was on the floor crying out to God. Isn’t that when we seek Him the most?
So, no, I don’t expect our mortgage to magically go away. I’m selling stuff like crazy but if we pay it off just by selling stuff then it’s US paying it off and not necessarily something miraculous. I’m asking God to really show out.
What if His answer is no?
Ok, then He knows best. But what is happening inside me during this process is becoming more important than the outcome.
I’m flawed and messy but I’m going to keep going. One thing this book as done is give me a view of what could be.
What have I missed out on all these years of peripheral praying? Only God knows. But He’s still ready to bless us. Just ask.
Join us on this journey! I’ll be keeping up more on it here so that someday my kids will get to see that their prayer life can be so much more!
Keep it Simple.
