I’m so excited to share this with y’all! This is a really cool way to give a gift that gives back! One of my very best good friends has introduced me to a friend of hers that works with some amazingly hard working women in Albania. These women are the knitters that make up a group called Handmade in Albania. *Note: Christmas orders have already been shipped but you can order now to get the mid January shipment in time for Valentine’s day!! See below for special discount!
I want you to pause for a moment and think about that. The last time you went to a store and bought a scarf or hat, how did it make you feel?
NOTHING. That’s right.
Handmade in Albania lets you give a gift that gives back. Special coupon code just for Simple Classic Life readers til January 10!! Use code CLASSIC at checkout to get 15% off!!! Expires January 10.
Here’s an excerpt from the About Page from their website (copied with permission)
Economic opportunities for women in rural communities are difficult to come by. Where we serve in Albania, limited education and resources, not to mention the expense and difficulty of commuting and responsibilities for family care all represent barriers for women to contribute financially to their families.
Our attempt has been to develop skills (or take advantage of existing skills) to empower women create commodities which can be sold and thereby help their families economically.
We bring in much of the goods used in the products they create (yarns, jewelry components, paper goods, etc.) and the price of the inputs is deducted from their profits.
Proceeds from past sales have enable women to purchase necessities like heating oil and medicines as well as ‘luxuries’ such as a first indoor kitchen sink. Thank you for your interest in making a difference in the lives of this little corner of Albania.
I’m totally ordering these!! Last year I gave an infinity scarf as a gift. When you order from them, your item comes with a tag that tells you which knitter made your gift! My scarf was made by Roshi. Here she is.
Something else happens when you order from them… whenever I wear my scarf from her, I pray for her several times during the day. Prayer is powerful and changes things. God longs to hear from us and treasures our prayers to Him. Let that sink in for a moment.
The money they earn each year from this project is equivalent to about two months’ salary at minimum wage. It fills in gaps as two of them do agricultural work when it is in season. Two of them just finished harvesting olives for a nearby farm. It’s amazing what this will do for their families and you can be a part of it! Here’s a picture of me and my momma last year at the Madison tour of homes and the infinity scarf I have on was from the knitters.
I know it’s too late to give one of these for this Christmas but Valentine’s day is just around the corner. There’s a shipment coming over from there in mid January and these handmade items would be a perfect way to say “I love you” to the friend or loved one in your life. Enjoy!!
