Good morning friends! With so many articles about morning routines and telling you what to do, it seems like a weird post title right? Hmmm, 5 things not to do during morning coffee… well, here’s why…
Years ago, I was getting up a little earlier than the kids so I could have some time with God. That was the aim.
I’m gonna be real with y’all.
I get distracted so easily. This world of smartphones we live in can be very distracting. But that’s another post for another day. Today, I’m telling you what I’ve learned about my morning time and what works for me.
So, my ‘time with God’ turned into
“I’ll just check for messages really quick.” (5 mins)
and then “oh, there’s an urgent fb message about the youth event coming up, let me answer that” (5 mins)
then “someone had a quick question about their trim healthy mama breakfast, let me message them…”
so BAM! Time’s up and it’s wakeup time for the boys.
Any of this ring a bell with anyone?
Here’s what I’ve implemented during the month of January and it has worked so well that I’ve decided to share with y’all so we can all hold each other accountable. You can choose how you spend this time but it was very important to me to get a few verses in the start of my day and I really wanted to get better at finishing books I’d started. The book I’m reading currently was given to me by a friend and it’s amazing. It’s called Love Does by Bob Goff. Last year, I read Only Love Today and I’d recommend that one too.

I’d love to hear in the comments what some of your favorite reads are so I can add them to my list.
5 Things Not to Do!!!
DON’T hit the snooze button! Seriously, set your phone to something that makes you smile and just get up already. Hitting the snooze button is counterproductive and you won’t get any more meaningful sleep. Just get up.
DON’T turn on the news! There have been so many studies that show the negative effects of news on your health. It’s been suggested that you take some time for a ‘news fast’ a few times a week. Once you turn on the news, your precious 15 minutes of time will be gone and you won’t feel better, you’ll feel worse.
DON’T check social media! There will be plenty of time in your day to catch up on social media. And, by the way, you’ll never catch up on it. It’s a constant feed of ‘stuff’. We’ll talk about simplifying your social media life another day but for now, just give yourself that 15 minutes in the morning without it. Remember the day my son broke one of his collarbones? You just never know what your day will hold. Make sure it starts peacefully.
DON’T pick up your phone! Your phone has the messages, calendar appointments, tasks to do, and more stuff than you can absorb in 15 minutes. Put. it. down.
DON’T start breakfast! Once you enter the kitchen, your 15 minutes of reset will be gone. If you get up just 15 minutes earlier, make it count. You can start breakfast when your timer goes off or when your time is up. (however long you can allow.)
I’d love to hear what works for y’all. Send me a message or a comment and let me know!
